Georgian Heights
Elementary School
Our school is participating in an important district initiative.  It is called Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support (PBIS).

What is Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support?
PBIS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. It is systems approach to enhancing the capacity of schools to educate all children by developing research-based, school-wide, and classroom behavior support systems.  The process focuses on improving a school's ability to teach and support positive behavior for all students.  Rather than a prescribed program, PBIS provides systems for schools to design, implement, and evaluate effective school-wide, classroom, non-classroom, and student specific plans.  PBIS includes school-wide procedures and processes intended for all students and all staff in all settings.  IT is an approach to creating a safe and productive learning environment where teachers can teach and all students can learn.

What is PBIS at our school?
We have adopted a unified set of classroom rules.  Similar to the Columbus City Schools Code of Student Conduct, these rules define our expectations for behavior in our school.  You will see these rules posted throughout the school and your child will be learning them during his or her first days at school.  Our unified classroom rules, found in every classroom and non-classroom setting in the school, are as follows:

Rule # 1: Be Safe
Rule #2: Be Respectful
Rule #3: Be Responsible
Rule #4: Believe in Yourself

As part of our PBIS process, our staff members teach and model these expectations on a daily basis.  We have many levels of rewards that your child can receive as the demonstrate the above expectations, such as: Talon Tickets, Peak Free Fun Tickets, Monthly Character Word Coloring Contest, and Mrs. Kay's Red Tail Hawk Lanyards.

Talon Tickets
Talon tickets are given when your child is caught following one of the school-wide expectations.  They can turn them in to the PBIS prize window to try to win a prize each Friday at the end of the week drawing.

Peak Free Fun Tickets
By staying out of PEAK, each student has a fun ticket that they use to get into our bi-monthly school-wide rewards.  Our rewards range from face painting, extra recess, a movie, etc.  As the year goes on we will move from bi-monthly to every three weeks and then once a month.  If a student has been sent to PEAK during the time span they will get their FUN TICKET back so that they can try again to earn the next reward.

Character Word Color Contest
Each month we focus on a new character word.  The word is read on the morning announcements and is hung at the front doors of the school.  Students are able to draw pictures of what that character word looks like in different places at school.  The pictures are hung by the front doors and winners are announced at the end of the month.

Red Tail Hawk Lanyard
Mrs. Kay, our school counselor, will be on the lookout for students demonstrating our school-wide expectations.  When she finds someone they will be presented with a lanyard to wear all day.  At the end of the day they get to return it to her so that she can be on the lookout for more the next day.
If you have any questions about Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support, please feel fee to contact your child's teacher.  We look forward to a wonderful year of teaching your child.
